ABOUT THE ART

LY's goal with this sculpture is to give back all of the LUV and happiness she held following these two challenging years of the pandemic. This artwork shows that in-between bright and dark moments, hope can shine even through the gray shades.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ly depicts supernatural characters in grayscale illustrations that take the form of screen prints, paintings, and murals. She is known for how she depicts these characters’ eyes, which always gaze directly at the viewer no matter the position of their lanky bodies. Since 2015, she has been painting her character LUV in everyday urban settings, often with a skateboard in tow. In many ways a self-portrait, LUV is an expression of Ly’s memories, emotions, and imagination. She has also brought LUV to life in three dimensions, producing small sculptures and augmented reality renderings of her brooding icon. Ly works in a graphic style with smooth planes of color and crisp, hard edges, and considers Tokyo’s graffitied walls to be an important influence on her work.
